Maradona 'may leave' as Argentina coach

Diego Maradona's future as Argentina coach is unclear after the team's devastating 4-0 loss to Germany in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Maradona 'may leave' as Argentina coach

Knocked out: Argentina coach Diego Maradona hugs his daughter after his side are knocked out of the World Cup by Germany

"I may leave tomorrow, but I'd like that these boys continue showing who they are and keep playing real Argentina football," Maradona said, looking tired and heartbroken after the match in Cape Town.

Asked to clarify his plans for the future, he said "I'll have to think carefully about it and talk with my family, and the players. There are many issues here."

Whatever happens, Maradona said that Argentina was on the right path and that "whoever comes after me" should continue its attacking style of play despite the collapse against Germany.

Seven heaven: David Villa (left) was the difference as Spain beat Paraguay in dramatic fashion

It took two penalties and several rattles of the woodwork to separate Spain and Paraguay on Saturday night, but eventually Europe continued its quarter-final eclipse of Latin America when David Villa scored an 85th minute winner to usher his side into their first World Cup semi-final in 60 years, and himself one goal closer to the Golden Boot.

Villa’s goal ended the stubborn resistance of a Paraguayan side who effectively stifled the European Champions passing game, and broke a stalemate that had survived two penalties, both missed in a remarkable two second-half minutes.

Marseille's Didier Deschamps rejects Liverpool manager's job

Didier Deschamps and Marseille have ruled the former Chelsea midfielder out of the running to become the next manager of Liverpool.

Deschamps rejects Liverpool job

Short shrift: Marseille have told Liverpool not to bother

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson had looked most likely to take over before Marseille's title-winning coach Deschamps emerged as a strong contender.

However, the World Cup winner has now rejected any chance of him joining Liverpool, revealing he is "in discussions" about a contract extension with the French club..

He explained, "I am happy at Marseille. I am not there for just one year. A coach must be there for the long haul, and that is my wish."

The French club's president has also dismissed the chances of Deschamps, who also led Monaco to the 2004 Champions League final, taking over at Anfield.

It was reported in L'Equipe that Liverpool chief executive Christian Purslow contacted Marseille and asked to speak to Deschamps - a request which was turned down by Jean-Claude Dassier.

Dassier claimed: "He asked me if I allowed him to meet Didier and Jean-Pierre Bernes (Deschamps' agent).

"I replied that I did not allow any meeting to take place. I have also indicated that there is no way we'll let go of our coach."

Capello seeks urgent FA talks over his future

Fabio Capello's England future was in doubt last night after he admitted wanting urgent talks with his FA bosses.

The Italian is under huge pressure after England were sent crashing out of the World Cup in humiliating fashion by Germany.

Capello, who insisted “we played well”, vowed not to quit his £6million-a-year post and the FA face a huge compensation pay-out if they sack him.

He said: “I want to speak with the chairman to decide my future. But resign, no. No. Absolutely no.

“We have to wait until I come back to London. We have time to decide. We have to decide whether he [FA chairman Sir Dave Richards] has confidence in me or not. We have to wait. Sorry. No more.”

Capello and his England squad fly home tonight and he is expected to meet Club England chiefs – including Richards and Sir Trevor Brooking – later this week.

But after insisting England could get to the final, Capello fell short of even the FA’s bare minimum of a quarter-final place.

They may now want him to quit, but Capello will not walk away without the pay-off his is entitled to following the hasty renegotiation of his contract shortly before the finals.

However, England’s heaviest-ever defeat in a tournament has left Capello’s future hanging by a thread and he did his credibility no good by claiming: “We played well. Germany is a big team. They played a good game.”

A clause in his contract allowing both parties to review their position after the World Cup was removed last month.

That now looks a costly mistake and Capello last night tried to excuse England’s defeat by insisting the referee not giving our “equaliser” was the game’s turning point.

Capello said: “I’m sure that a big mistake from the referee was too important for us to go forward.

“You don’t know the psychology of the players. From 2-1 to 3-1 we played better than Germany. Lampard’s chance, it would have been different. It’s too big a mistake.”

Germany 4-1 England: Brilliant Germany Dismantle Unlucky Three Lions

Frank Lampard's disallowed strike has left England trailing at Free State Stadium, as Germany lead 2-1. Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski scored and it looked comfortable, but Matthew Upson's tally has turned this into one of the best matches of the World Cup 2010 thus far.

Both sides used line-ups that were relatively unchanged. Three Lions boss Fabio Capello used the same starting XI that defeated Slovenia, keeping faith in Matthew Upson, James Milner, and Jermaine Defoe. Meanwhile Joachim Loew made a solitary variation to his squad as Klose, who returned from suspension, replaced the injured Cacau in attack.

Goalkeeper James was called into action after just four minutes, Mesut Oezil's run through the defence, beating Ashley Cole to the ball and volleying from a tight angle, but the veteran was ready and saved well.

England were having trouble clicking in attack in the early stages and Germany nearly took advantage on a counter, but Podolski wasted the opportunity when he attempted a shot rather than passing to a team-mate.

Frank Lampard has been poor in the group stages, but he burst forward with Defoe to ear a free-kick in a dangerous position 25 yards from goal, but he struck the set-piece straight into the wall.

Klose proved to be decisive for his national team yet again at the World Cup. A long ball was misread by John Terry and the striker easily held off Upson to poke past James and give the Germans the advantage after 20 minutes. The three-time World Cup winners had been the settled side and were full value for their lead.

David James saved Capello's men from going two down. Mueller put in a sublime through ball for Klose and the Portsmouth shot stopper got down quickly to block his close range effort.

It was a sign of things to come as Klose lobbed the ball over to Mueller inside the box, who flicked across goal to Podolski. The 25-year-old controlled and fired low past James for a 2-0 scoreline. England looked second-best, but going behind by another goal sprung them into life.

Minutes later, Upson made up for his previous error, heading in Steven Gerrard's cross to make it 2-1. It was turning out to be a thriller.

A most controversial decision on 38 minutes kept England behind. Lampard's dipping shot from outside the area hit the crossbar and bounced downwards. Lampard and Capello were already celebrating the goal, but the linesman ruled it did not cross the line. Replays proved it to be the wrong decision as the ball was clearly in the net and the team in the red strip were up in arms before the half-time whistle blew.
